South Africa — who regulates crypto platforms and how to check
Step 1 of 7 · Updated: · 5 min read

1. The FSCA licenses crypto asset service providers
In South Africa, crypto asset service providers (CASPs) are licensed by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA). Before using any platform, look it up on the FSCA’s register of authorised financial services providers and check what it is authorised to do.
2. How the two global platforms describe their set-up
- Binance lists South Africa on its licenses page. A third-party review reports that Binance RSA (Pty) Ltd (FSP 53694) is shown on the FSCA register as “Applied”, not “Authorised”. We have not confirmed this on the register ourselves — check the current status there before you rely on it. According to Binance’s disclosures, futures and options are offered through a separate OTC desk (FiveWest).
- OKX serves South Africa through CurrenC Group, an FSCA-authorised financial services provider (FSP 53709) acting as its representative, under a South Africa terms addendum.
These are the platforms’ own statements as of 18 Oct 2026. Read the current versions before signing up.
3. How to check a provider yourself
- Find the provider’s legal entity name and FSP number on its website (usually in the footer or legal pages).
- Search that name or number on the FSCA’s financial services provider search.
- Check that the authorisation covers crypto assets and the products you want.
- Be wary of anyone who cannot give you an FSP number, or who offers “guaranteed returns”.
4. Tax
Crypto gains can be taxable in South Africa. Keep records of every trade and ask a registered tax practitioner or check SARS guidance.
